Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-12-21 Summary: "Then all this time he was playing with his weak arm?!" ... This is one of those manga that grows on you. At the beginning I found the main character to be too cocky for my taste, but I soon got around to liking him more. This is because Ryoma Echizen, the twelve-year-old tennis prodigy, has reasons for the way in which he behaves, and as the volumes of the manga progress, we slowly get to understand him better. Besides, some of his opponents are so obnoxious, that Ryoma's attitude does not seem all that out of place. The story starts with Ryoma arriving at Seigaku, a high ...more

Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Ryoma Echizen just joined the Seishun Academy's tennis team, which is known for being one of the most competitive teams in Japan. While most of the freshmen are on pins and needles hoping they won't get cut from the team, Ryoma Echizen is confident, cool, and collected. Some might even say he's cocky, but at least he's got the skills to back up his attitude. With his virtually unreturnable "twist serve," Ryoma is sure to make the starting team. The Kanto Tournament Finals are down to...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-02-11 Summary: A good read from a great champion! ... I thought it was a honest narration of a great champion's quest for excellence. He does not show his greatness by pulling others down as Agassi has done in his book. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-01-07 Summary: Very good book ... I enjoyed taking the time to get to 'know' Pete a little bit. I always loved his game, his class and his committment to excellence. It was nice to get a behind the scenes feel of the mindset that Sampras had through certain matches, off time - and through his entire career. Peter Bodo has always been a greatly overrated writer in my book. The editing is a bit sloppy - but otherwise - this is a pretty easy read, and nice to get a feel for a guy who, in my opinion, is the hands-down best player I've ever seen. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-01-04 Summary: excellent ... This book did what a sports autobiography should do! While it lacked "sensationalism," it really reflected Pete's tennis journey. His insights on other players were helpful as well. ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-12-15 Summary: Pistol Pete scores another winner except this time on paper ... This is an interesting book that outlines the attitude and demonstrates the thought process of a champion. I read many biographies about different standouts in their own fields. They all have that cocky, confident approach to the turf that they belong. I don't believe there's any other way to excel in the very sport you compete unless you let your adversaries know that they are about to face "the champion." Pete Sampras gets that point across throughout the entire book. I also noticed that he doesn't talk about any ...more

An athletic prodigy, Pete resolved from his earliest playing days never to let anything get in the way of his love for the game. But while this determination led to tennis domination, success didn’t come without a price. Here for the first time Pete speaks freely about the personal trials he faced—including the death of a longtime coach and...more
